Scratching the Surface, Jane Mellor

3 – 18 May 2007

Life sized graphite drawings depict a wardrobe, a chest of drawers and a mock sash window, each presented with vital parts of their construction missing. The absent components are replaced with dense areas of graphite, turning the objects into what the artist describes as ‘doorways into darkness.’ Hung just above floor level, the drawings have the effect of dwarfing the viewer.

In producing these large and time consuming pieces Mellor has entered into a process that is shaped by notions of skill and labour, as well as the patience required for building up layer upon layer of graphite. Both the physical presence of the work and its subject matter refer back to previous works by the artist where furniture was used as a stand in for the body.

Mellor is also a member of the artist collective utk.
