The Space is Empty and Waiting, Meriel Herbert
8 - 23 October 2005
This is the artist’s first solo show in Sheffield and in it she tries to articulate the state of panic this situation creates within her. Like many artists the weight of her own expectations lead to making anything at all near impossible.
Alone in the studio, she tries to create work with what she has and knows best- recording equipment and her body. She waits and wills ‘the art’ to happen. This results in an exhibition of nervous twitches. In the gallery the audience are made to experience this uncomfortable condition: the tension, stress and frustration are palpable.
