A2V, Andrew Curtis and Chia-Wen Lee
3 - 18 September 2005
Andrew Curtis produces multiples in the form of prints, artist books and mail art. Every week, as part of his artistic practice, he sends 48 printed ‘postcards’ to artists, galleries and art schools amongst others.
For Bloc Space he has mailed a number of these special editions in the run-up to the show which, along with new photographs and an artist book, will form part of the exhibition. He explains how the postal workers who deliver the postcards could be described as “unknowing henchmen” - they are of prime importance in the process of Curtis‘ work, but remain unaware of their role.
Chia-Wen Lee has recently exhibited in Taiwan, Korea and London. Her work at Bloc will feature an unusual artist book, as well as twelve stuffed toys that represent the animals of the Chinese calendar.
A primary concern in Chia-Wen Lee’s practice is to create her own definition of selfportraiture, which she uses as a medium to explore and discuss her personal sense of dislocation and isolation, particularly with regard to her cultural background.
