A GROUP EXHIBITION CURATED BY INTERSTELLAR
29 April - 19 May 2003

Artists: Richard Bartle, Salvatore Fiorello, Matt MacDowel, Dominic Mason, Jane Walker, Sean Williams and Stuart Wray

As part of the citywide contemporary art event Art Sheffield 03, Bloc, in association with Interstellar, is proud to present ‘Citi-zen’, an exhibition of paintings with a relationship to urban experience, photography and process.

“The paintings in this exhibition cohere around the use of urban architectural motifs - buildings are what perhaps signify a city, yet this ’structured’ environment is associated with cultural and social fragmentation - and the artists varied adaptation of photography - transposing modes of communication to image aspects of the contemporary urban experience. The title ‘Citi-zen’ refers to the discipline of painting as a practice, whilst being a wry comment on the sometimes antithetical desire for anchorage and enlightenment.”
