Bloc Billboard

Bloc Billboard is situated on Eyre Lane outside the gallery and is used by artists as an experimental public exhibition space, or an extention to their work in the gallery.

Throughout 2009 we will be continuing our series of commissioned works for the billboard. These usually aim to showcase work by artists who have previously already shown work at Bloc or have studios at here. Artists are selected on the grounds of how they may respond to the challenge of creating large scale artworks in the public realm.

Nichola Pemberton
Weird Head

25th September - 26th October Bloc Billboard

The Painted background shape and repetitive mark-making in Weird Head concern themselves with the act of making. Their execution wholly consumes the artist’s headspace offering an escapist retreat from critical and everyday concerns. The head may be presented as an abstract piece and assessed by aesthetic merit, fronting its formal qualities. However, the presence of the eyes provides the viewer with a literal link to their own gaze. The Weird Head reflects the viewer’s assessment, their search for criticality and it seems the Weird Head is devoid of answers. In this and works where the focus lies in childish making processes attention is drawn to issues of the expectation and responsibility of an artist and their work.

Nichola is based at East Street Arts in Leeds.
