A42D: Twitter discussion with Lesley Guy 25.06.09

blocprojects: .@LJGUY Here we go then. Thanks for taking the time to do this Lesley #a42d
LJGuy: .@blocprojects Hello, bear with me if I’m a little slow on this. thanks for organizing this discussion. #a42d
blocprojects: .@LJGuy You wrote about Bloc’s programme in terms of community building, encouraging dialogue and ideas-sharing among local artists.. #a42d
LJGuy: .@blocprojects I guess it’s a slow medium which is good. #a42d
blocprojects: .@LJGuy ..do you think the current exhibition had a ‘noticeable-effect’ in this respect? #a42d
LJGuy: .@blocprojects yes, that is one of the things bloc is known for. Even more so with the on-line dialogue. Openings were important too #a42d
blocprojects: .@LJGuy oh you tweet of exhibitions in the past tense. Hope not. #a42d
LJGuy: .@blocprojects Up until recently it felt like it was a thing of the past. I missed it. there was talk of no more exhibitions #a42d
blocprojects: .@LJGuy we’re still getting used to the online stuff! #a42d
blocprojects: .@LJGuy any thoughts now the work is up? You have a work in the show, don’t you? #a42d
LJGuy: .@blocprojects that stuff is definitely getting better, I like talking to people face-to-face tho, socially #a42d
blocprojects: .@LJGuy it’s nice to see the artists have largely ignored the curatorial ‘recession’ theme IMO #a42d
LJGuy: .@blocprojects It looks good, you can see that the artists have had fun with it. Not done what was expected of them, #a42d
blocprojects: .@LJGuy yeah, the medium and format remains quite an open space ? ‘of play’ as Ranciere puts it! #a42d
LJGuy: .@blocprojects However, it wasnt a restrictive curatorial theme, or obvious that you had to abide by it somehow more open #a42d
LJGuy: .@blocprojects you can play anywhere, even with very limited means. with a stick in the dirt. #a42d
LJGuy: .@blocprojects having a limited format put everyone on a level playing field #a42d
blocprojects: .@LJGuy or in a gallery-space. And the silent auction, has this way of selling had a disruptive effect on the exhibition/work? #a42d
LJGuy: .@blocprojects I thought it would be more disruptive or confusing, it has become a different show, like a catwalk but subtler #a42d
LJGuy: .@blocprojects esp with the kind of work being shown, its really quiet in there. It still seems to be about drawing tho #a42d
blocprojects: .@LJGuy it’s a more performative way of selling (we’ve sold artists’ work before), which asks more question about value. Do you agree? #a42d
LJGuy: .@blocprojects I think the auction bit became more interesting as its gone on, the spread sheet .. #a42d
LJGuy: .@blocprojects yes, value. how do we value our work, how do we choose what to show, why show at all? interesting. #a42d
blocprojects: .@LJGuy ah yes, that could have been a work (not drawing though). #a42d
LJGuy: .@blocprojects it would have been interesting if no names or info were supplied, just a number, like the RCA postcard show #a42d
blocprojects: .@LJGuy is that where ‘the pressures of selling’ come in. Is this something quite unfamiliar to Sheffielders? #a42d
LJGuy: .@blocprojects Its not something I’m used to. pressure to sell= deciding what has value, like a trade-off. rather than just being seen #a42d
LJGuy: .@blocprojects maybe the question is for us in sheff, is it a blessing not being part of the market? #a42d
LJGuy: .@blocprojects Or a hinderance having to rely on public funding? #a42d
blocprojects: .@LJGuy perhaps the real pressures at the moment are in trying to maintain a strong local art community or scene… #a42d
blocprojects: .@LJGuy …Does a recession focus people more on these things again? #a42d
LJGuy: .@blocprojects I think SCAF work really hard to raise the profile and get the public on board. How do we as artists keep it going? #a42d
LJGuy: .@blocprojects without getting claustrophobic, cliqu-ey or provincial? #a42d
blocprojects: .@LJGuy a nice place to end. Thanks again Lesley. #a42d You can read Lesley’s text here: http://bit.ly/La1oq #a42d
LJGuy: .@blocprojects sorry for the time delay. It can do, or people get worried about their own security and close ranks perhaps #a42d
LJGuy: .@blocprojects thanks, it was good to talk in this way, a new space to play! #a42d
blocprojects: ‘A42D’ group drawing show is on until 6pm this Saturday. Bidding ends 6pm Sunday. http://blocprojects.co.uk/ #a42d
